Protesting Isn’t A One-Size-Fits-All Tactic

I don’t often write about current events relating to racist a**holes because it’s exhausting. I know when I was engrossed with the Trayvon Martin trial last year, I’d find myself thinking about the conversation I’d have to have with my son someday about race. So often teachable moments come up thanks to those who can’t tuck their racism in. Yet what could be an “aha” moment gets diluted or convoluted due to visceral reactions.

Donald Sterling is a known racist and sexist. His hatred runs so deep that he even changed his own Jewish surname to a more “acceptable” one. I refuse to believe that players and their agents were unaware of Sterling’s ideologies throughout the years; especially since owners have expressed their disgust in his actions at previous NBA executive level meetings. In game 4, NBPA president and Clippers front man Chris Paul and his teammates showed an act of protest by leaving their shooting shirts at center court. But for some people, that small act wasn’t enough.

I said I was going to share more photos this year on here. And with the playoffs underway and work stuff happening, I’ll probably be taking a lot more photos on the journey than I normally do.

Is This Year San Antonio’s Last Chance To Win It All?

Tonight San Antonio had the opportunity to set a new franchise record for season wins, but Coach Pop opted to take it easy on the starters. They’ve already sealed up home court advantage for the playoffs. While they’ve been playing their usual blue-collar style of team basketball, you have to wonder can this Spurs squad complete their winning season by raising the trophy in June?

San Antonio is right up there with the Lakers and Celtics when it comes to storied franchises. But they haven’t won a championship since 2007. In 7 years, the Spurs have added and subtracted pieces to complement the big 3 of Parker/Ginobili/Duncan. Yet, in those 7 years, they’ve come up short against the Lakers, Mavs, and Thunder. Last year, it was mostly Manu Ginobili’s frenetic play and free throws that cost them crucial wins vs. Miami in the Finals. This season, however, the Spurs seem to be operating as a well-oiled machine.

Relationship Criticism AKA “When Sh*t Gets Real”

If dating is like being on 90 days probation at the new job, then taking a relationship inventory is that dreaded performance review.

Sometimes an isolated event will prompt you to have a come to Jesus conversation with your significant other. Maybe you tripped over his size 13 Jordans for the last damn time that morning. Or maybe she’s noticed that you’re not as emotionally in sync as you used to be. Other times, as a couple, you just reach a point where it’s necessary to do a check-in to see if you’re both on the same page in the same book.

Things can get stale in a relationship and eventually going through the motions becomes detrimental. It might not be as drastic as “do I stay or do I go?”. But every couple has to take a honest survey on their relationship up to that point. Check out an explanation of constructive criticism vs. good ol fashioned complaining in romantic relationships.
