Duke Went Down Fighting, Cuse Stays Undefeated

For as long as I can remember, Duke fans have been among the most obnoxious group of people in all of sports. They’re right up there with Patriots and Lakers fans. This year is the first time the Blue Devils were outside of the top 25 for a few weeks. Even being in un-chartered territory, the fans were pounding their chest loudly going into Saturday’s matchup against the undefeated Syracuse Orangemen.

Well 2013-14 should be known as #thehumbling

In what turned out to be a record-breaking showing at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse was well-prepared to challenge this highly touted 3 point shooting offense. In true Duke fashion, the team hit 15 on 36 attempts from beyond the arc, including Rasheed Sulaimon’s buzzer-beater that sent the game into over time.

Jerami Grant (#3) put up 24 points and 12 rebounds on a clear mismatch vs. Duke's front

Cuse’s answer? Jerami Grant dominating in the paint. Grant easily benefited from the mismatch by putting up a double-double on top of shooting 100% from the free throw line. CJ Fair, the Orange’s leading scorer, solidified why he should be a 1st round pick in June. He was virtually un-guardable during his 45 minutes of play, despite missing a timely free throw that would’ve given the Orange a bit of a cushion.

This game was the first of many matches that will fuel this new ACC rivalry between two programs that are perennial competitors in the NCAA tournament. Coach K will seek redemption when Duke hosts Syracuse on Feb 22.

For now, let’s all enjoy the silence of Duke fans yelling about their glory days of running the ACC.
